Heart Blown Open: Indigenous Perspectives on Community Care is a group exhibit that explores the ways First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists express and administer care in their communities. This collection of works demonstrates how Indigenous methods of care persist, thrive, and evolve despite colonial disruptions—positioning Indigenous artists as active participants in reclaiming, redefining, and enacting care through creative expression.
Indigenous worldview understands that care is an evolving, living practice rooted in cultural and spiritual traditions. Illuminating land-based knowledge, kinship, and reciprocity, Indigenous methodologies provide critical insight on Western models of care, which are often singularly transactional, individualistic, and institutional. The works in Heart Blown Open offer a powerful counter-narrative illustrating that care is not an obligation or a burden, but a transformative force that simultaneously brings people together and elevates communities.
