MÉTIS IN MONOTYPE

2023

This 2023 monotype titled, Riel House, is one in the Métis In Monotypes series that incorporates signs, symbols, historical references, and imagery relating to Métis identity.

Using silkscreen and relief printing, as well as stamps and embossment from 3D printed wood templates, I created a series of 11” X 15” prints on BFK paper.  My family’s historical scrip document has been overlayed into the imagery, along with excerpts from my grandfather’s baptismal certificate.

Scrip signifies the displacement of our Métis ancestors from the Red River Valley, and also provides the historical documentation needed for modern day Métis citizenship, an irony I find interesting.
