IN THE KOHKUM SCARF: UKRAINE
2022
Kohkum scarves were introduced to Métis and First Nation women through early Ukrainian settlers. Through their trading interactions the colourful Ukrainian scarves were adopted into Indigenous culture. These beautiful floral scarves, which have come to be known as kohkum scarves, continue to be used as practical every day items, and have also been adopted into Indigenous ceremonial regalia.
The prints in this collection feature the map of Ukraine with the kohkum scarf floral motifs overlaid. Below the floral patterns is the Ukrainian trident, or tryzub, which is one of Ukraine's most iconic symbols. Included with the 11" X 15" silkcreened floral prints on BFK paper are a series of 5" X 7" portraits of Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The exhibit also has a sculptural element, which includes sweetgrass and postcards wrapped in several of the kohkum scarves.
